Chapter 1 — The Mafia Boss’s Quadruplets Broke Every Nanny—Then Serena Heard the Recording

The recording began with a click, a breath, and the unmistakable voice of Lucia’s father.

“Do not hire Serena Valente.”

Serena’s fingers tightened around the edge of the cream-colored folder.

Across the table, all four boys remained motionless.

Marco’s fork hovered near his mouth.

Nico stared at the speaker.

Alessandro had forgotten the bread in his hand.

Tommy watched Serena instead of the device.

The voice continued.

“She will tell you she needs the job.

She will probably mention our daughter.

Serena has no permanent home, almost no money, and a history of leaving positions when things become difficult.”

“That isn’t true,” Serena whispered.

Victor did not look away from her.

The recording played on.

“In two weeks, I am asking the court to let Lucia live with me.

A stable salary and housing could complicate that.

Refuse Serena tonight, and I will make the inconvenience worth your time.”

The kitchen seemed to shrink around her.

Serena heard the rain against the windows.

She heard the faint scrape of Marco’s fork touching his plate.

She heard her own breathing grow shallow.

Then came the sentence that hurt most.

“She thinks this job can save her.

It cannot.”

Victor stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Serena had spent months enduring polite threats from Lucia’s father.

He had questioned her apartment, her income, her judgment, and every sacrifice she made.

He had never once admitted the truth so plainly.

He did not merely believe he could provide more for Lucia.

He was trying to make sure Serena could provide nothing.

She closed the folder before the boys could see her hands shaking.

“How did you get this?” she asked.

“He called my office,” Victor said.

“Calls involving employment candidates are logged.

When he offered money, the conversation was preserved.”

“You recorded him without warning?”

“My attorney will determine what can be used in court.

The email he sent afterward will be easier.”

Victor opened the folder again and turned one page toward her.

The printed message repeated the offer in colder language.

It described Serena as unstable, desperate, and unfit.

It asked Victor to prevent her from establishing employment before the hearing.

At the bottom, Lucia’s father had written that Serena’s failure would be beneficial to everyone involved.

Serena read the sentence twice.

“Everyone,” she said.

Tommy pushed his untouched orange slice across the table toward her.

It was such a small gesture that it nearly broke her.

Victor noticed.

“Why did you not disclose the custody dispute when you applied?” he asked.

“Because I applied to care for your children, not to borrow your power.”

“You needed the job.”

“I still do.” Serena met his eyes.

“But I was not going to walk into court and claim a mafia boss had rescued me.

I planned to earn a salary, secure a home, and let the facts speak for themselves.”
