Chapter 1 — My Ex Returned While My Farmer Husband Waited for the Truth

The diner door opened behind me, and the bell above it gave one bright, ordinary ring.

Every person in the room looked toward the entrance.

Daniel’s eyes moved past my shoulder.

The color drained from his face so quickly that I did not need Rosa’s whisper to understand who had walked in.

My old boyfriend stood just inside the doorway.

For months, I had tried to remember him as he had been before fear made a coward of him.

I remembered the boy who waited outside my father’s house, the boy who promised we would leave town together someday, the boy who held my hand beneath the bleachers and spoke about forever as if forever were easy.

The man in the doorway looked older than my memories, though not by much.

His coat was damp from the evening mist.

His hair had been combed carefully, as though he had prepared himself for a reunion instead of an intrusion.

His gaze found me first.

Then it dropped to the crumpled letter in my hand.

“You read it,” he said.

His voice carried through the quiet diner.

I felt Daniel move beside me.

He slid out of the booth and stood, but he did not step forward.

He did not claim me.

He did not tell the other man to leave.

“I should give you privacy,” Daniel said.

He reached for his coat.

I caught his sleeve.

“No.”

Daniel looked at my hand gripping the flannel at his wrist.

“Stay,” I said.

It was the first choice I made that night, and the entire room seemed to feel its weight.

My former boyfriend took another step inside.

“Can we speak alone?”

“Anything you need to say can be said here.”

His mouth tightened.

He glanced around at the waitress, the men at the counter, Rosa standing behind me, and Daniel beside the booth.

He had expected me to be waiting for him.

He had not expected witnesses.

“I made a mistake,” he said.

The words were so small that for a moment I wondered whether I had heard them correctly.

“A mistake?”

“I panicked.

I didn’t know what to do.”

“So you vanished.”

“I needed time.”

My fingers tightened around Daniel’s sleeve.

“You had time,” I said.

“I was the one who had days.

Days before my clothes stopped fitting.

Days before my father sent me away.

Days before I married a stranger because the man who promised to stand beside me disappeared.”

He looked down, but only briefly.

“That is why I wrote.

I want to make it right.”

Daniel gently pulled his arm free from my hand.

The loss of that small contact frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

My former boyfriend saw it.

A flash of confidence returned to his face.

“You don’t have to stay here,” he told me.

“I came to take you home.”

I stared at him.

“Home?”
