Chapter 3 — My Ex Returned While My Farmer Husband Waited for the Truth

4.9Editorial score

You wrote about taking me away.

You wrote about beginning again.

You wrote about what people might think and what kind of life I should have.

But you never asked about the child you left me to carry alone.”

“Of course I meant both of you.”

“Then why couldn’t you write it?”

He opened his mouth, but no answer came.

The waitress slowly lowered the coffeepot onto the counter.

Rosa’s eyes never left his face.

He looked around the room and realized everyone had seen the hesitation.

“I was nervous,” he said.

“I did not know how to put everything into a letter.”

“You knew how to write that you wanted me back.”

“Because I do.”

“Do you want me? Or do you want the girl I was before you discovered that love sometimes asks a man to sacrifice something?”

His voice sharpened.

“You think he loves you? He married you because he felt sorry for you.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened, but he remained silent.

“Maybe he did feel sorry for me at first,” I said.

“But pity does not fill a kettle before sunrise.

Pity does not build a swing because it overheard one careless wish.

Pity does not give a woman a key to her own door and spend months waiting for her to decide whether she feels safe enough to open it.”

“Those are chores.”

“No.

Those are choices.”

My former boyfriend stepped closer.

“You loved me.”

“I did.”

The honesty of my answer hurt Daniel.

I saw it in the way his eyes shifted toward the window.

But I had already lived inside too much silence.

I would not begin a real marriage by hiding the truth.

“I loved you,” I continued.

“And when you left, I kept loving the person I thought you were.

That is who I mourned.

Not the man standing here.”

His face reddened.

“You are choosing him because you are angry with me.”

“I am choosing him because he stayed when staying was difficult.”

“You barely know him.”

I turned toward Daniel.

“I know he takes his coffee black unless he is worried, and then he forgets to drink it.

I know he checks every latch twice when a storm is coming.

I know he sings under his breath in the barn but stops the second he thinks someone can hear.

I know he puts the larger piece of bread on my plate and pretends not to notice.

I know he has never asked me to thank him for taking care of me.”

Daniel stared at me.

I had never told him I noticed those things.

My former boyfriend reached for the letter.

“Come outside.

We can talk without all these people watching.”

I pulled the paper away.

“These people watched Daniel stand here and tell me the choice was mine.

They can watch me make it.”

I folded the letter along its original creases.

Then I placed it in my former boyfriend’s hand.
