The regional service director kept his radio raised.
“Captain, do not close the aircraft door.
This flight is not leaving.”
A strange silence settled over first class.
Edward Hamilton stared at him as though he had misheard.
“Excuse me?”
The director did not answer immediately.
His eyes were still fixed on the boarding pass crushed in my hand.
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs.
Vale?”
I nodded once.
That was all it took.
His posture changed completely.
The flight attendant noticed it too.
Her face, already pale, went rigid.
Edward looked between us.
“What is this?”
The director turned toward him.
“Mr.
Hamilton, you may want to sit down before I explain whose seat you just tried to steal.”
Edward gave a sharp laugh.
“I don’t care who she is.
I paid for first class.”
“So did she.”
“Then move her somewhere else.”
The regional director’s expression hardened.
“You assaulted a passenger.”
Edward’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
For the first time since he shoved me, confidence left his eyes.
“Assaulted? That’s ridiculous.
She was blocking the aisle.”
A voice came from across the cabin.
“No, she wasn’t.”
Everyone turned.
The man who had lowered his phone earlier stood slowly from his seat.
“She was sitting down,” he said.
“He told her he wanted that seat.
She showed him her boarding pass.
He grabbed her arm first.
Then he shoved her.”
Edward snapped toward him.
“Stay out of this.”
The man lifted his phone.
“I recorded part of it.”
Edward went still.
The regional director looked at the phone, then back at the flight attendant.
“Did you witness the contact?”
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I watched her struggling with the answer.
A few minutes earlier she had been preparing to remove me because Edward demanded it.
