Daniel knew.
Of course he knew.
She had told me he said a baby would ruin everything.
Now his voice became colder.
“You don’t get to make decisions like this because you’re upset.”
Emily lifted her swollen face.
“I get to decide whether I’m safe.”
Daniel laughed again, but this time there was panic underneath it.
“Safe? From me? Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds?”
Then he looked at me.
“She’s turned you against me.”
I thought of the little boy I had once tucked into bed.
The boy who used to reach for my hand crossing parking lots.
The teenager whose graduation picture I still kept in my suitcase.
That boy existed.
So did the man standing in front of me.
Loving who someone had been did not require pretending not to see who they had become.
“Nobody turned me against you,” I said.
“I watched you do it yourself.”
A buzzer sounded from the apartment entry panel.
Daniel spun toward it.
Private security downstairs had been alerted along with the police.
He looked at the front door, then at me.
The power in the hallway shifted.
Until that moment, Daniel had controlled every exit, every explanation, every phone, every version of the truth.
Now other people were coming through the door.
He knew it.
“Tell them it was a misunderstanding,” he said to Emily.
She stared at him.
“Tell them.”
His voice cracked on the second command.
Emily shook her head.
Daniel stepped toward her.
I lifted my phone higher.
“I’m still recording.”
He stopped.
That was the first time I saw real fear on my son’s face.
Not remorse.
Fear of evidence.
Someone knocked hard on the front door.
“Building security.”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
Within seconds, voices filled the apartment.
Security personnel entered first and separated us.
Police arrived moments later.
Daniel immediately became the version of himself strangers knew.
Controlled.
Polite.
Professional.
He told them Emily had fallen.
He said she was under stress.
He said I had misunderstood an argument because I had awakened in the middle of the night.
He even gave me a sad little smile while he said it.
That smile made something inside me turn to stone.
An officer asked Emily whether she wanted to speak away from Daniel.
She nodded.
