No one would have called me dramatic.
No one would have asked what I had done to provoke it.
But family had always been treated like a discount code for accountability in our house.
The more someone loved you, supposedly, the more damage you were expected to excuse.
I had spent years accepting that logic.
Not anymore.
I closed my laptop, unplugged the charger, and slid both into my backpack.
Mom grabbed my wrist.
I pulled free immediately.
She looked shocked.
I pointed to my ears, then my phone, and typed:
DO NOT TOUCH ME AGAIN.
Dad scoffed.
Marcus looked uncomfortable now.
He had wanted help with an essay.
Instead, he was watching the structure of the household shift beneath him.
I packed faster.
Laptop.
Charger.
Research notebook.
Medication.
Passport.
The small metal box containing my birth certificate and social security card.
Mom saw that and understood this was not a dramatic overnight exit.
I had planned for this.
“What about your things?” she asked.
I read her lips.
“I’ll come back with someone.”
Dad laughed and pointed toward the door.
“Go, then.”
He wanted the last word.
He always did.
So I let him have it.
I zipped the backpack.
Then I picked up the evidence bag and the blue folder.
I walked out.
The strangest part was the silence.
Without my hearing aids, the house felt detached from reality.
Doors closed without impact.
Footsteps became vibration.
My mother followed me down the stairs, but unless I turned around, she barely existed.
At the front door, she stepped in front of me.
Her eyes were wet.
For one dangerous second, I nearly softened.
Then she spoke slowly.
“Your father was angry.”
Not sorry.
Angry.
The explanation came before the apology.
As usual.
I typed on my phone.
ANGER DOESN’T REBUILD THEM.
She read it.
I added:
AND IT DOESN’T PAY FOR THEM.
Her face hardened.
