Chapter 4 — Grandma Called the Burns a Lesson—Then the Officer Heard Her Own Words

4.9Editorial score

The first time, I thought I had misheard.

“For what?”

“The bread.”

I had to look away for a moment.

“No.”

“But Grandma said—”

“Grandma was wrong.”

“What if I wasn’t supposed to take it?”

“You can be told not to do something without being hurt.”

She watched my face carefully, as if testing whether that rule was real.

“So I’m not bad?”

“No, Lily.”

Her eyes filled.

I kept my voice steady.

“You were hungry.

Even if you had broken a rule, no one gets to burn you.”

At the hospital, every new person who saw Lily’s hands asked some version of the same questions.

What happened? Who was there? When did it happen?

Each time Lily answered, her voice became a little less uncertain.

Grandma said I was stealing.

Grandma used the pan.

I tried to pull away.

Dad was in the garage.

I called Mommy.

Those sentences became the spine of the truth.

Evan arrived later without Janice.

He stood near the doorway of Lily’s room like he wasn’t sure whether he was allowed inside.

I didn’t invite him closer.

Lily noticed him and immediately tucked her hands against the blanket.

His face folded.

“Can I talk to her?” he asked me quietly.

“That depends on Lily.”

He looked stunned.

For him, fatherhood had always come with automatic access.

He had never considered that trust could be withdrawn.

He crouched near the doorway.

“Lily?”

She didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry you got hurt.”

Her eyes stayed on the blanket.

He swallowed.

“I should’ve come inside sooner.”

Still nothing.

Then he made the mistake he had been making all day.

“Grandma didn’t mean for it to get this serious.”

Lily looked up.

“She pushed my hands.”

Evan froze.

There was no anger in her voice.

That made it worse.

She was simply correcting him.

He looked at me.

I said nothing.

He stood and walked back into the hallway.

Later, an officer returned to speak with me and collect the recording properly.

I gave him the original file and explained when I had started it and what had happened before and after.
