The flight attendant’s warning light was still glowing when two airport officers stepped through the front door of Flight 405.
Behind them came Martin Hale, the corporate investigator for Claire’s construction company.
He wore a charcoal suit, carried a sealed evidence case, and looked past every passenger until his eyes found the blue folder lying near Chloe’s shoes.
Ryan stood immediately.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he announced.
His voice was loud enough for the entire first-class cabin to hear.
It was the same smooth, confident voice he used at dinner parties, sales presentations, and family gatherings whenever he wanted everyone to accept his version before anyone else could speak.
One of the officers raised a hand.
“Sir, remain where you are.”
Chloe clutched her leather bag to her chest.
The blue folder had fallen partly out when Elena Shaw’s voice came through Claire’s phone, but Chloe had not dared pick it up.
Claire remained standing in the aisle.
Her hands were steady now.
The humiliation had not disappeared.
Her husband had spent the flight touching another woman with a tenderness he had withheld from her for months.
He had allowed a stranger to call Chloe his wife.
He had looked Claire in the eye and ordered her back to her seat as though she were an inconvenience.
But the folder had changed the shape of the betrayal.
It had transformed pain into proof.
Martin crouched without touching the folder.
“Ms.
Morgan, can you identify this?”
“It appears to be a NorthStar freight bid packet,” Claire said.
“The blue cover, project code, and footer match our restricted procurement documents.”
Ryan gave a short laugh.
“Appears to be? So she doesn’t actually know.
Anyone could print a blue cover.”
Martin looked at him.
“That is correct.
Which is why no one will touch it until it is photographed and sealed.”
Chloe’s breathing became shallow.
Ryan noticed and turned toward her.
“Do not say anything.”
The command came too quickly.
Too sharply.
Chloe stared at him.
“You told me it was authorized.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Be quiet.”
The passengers around them stopped pretending not to listen.
The woman who had sat across the aisle from Claire raised her hand and addressed the officer.
“I saw the folder in that woman’s lap during the flight.
I also saw him try to grab his wife’s phone after she called her attorney.”
“General counsel,” Claire corrected quietly.
The woman nodded.
“Even worse for him.”
A nervous laugh passed through the cabin.
Ryan’s face reddened.
“This is my marriage.
None of you know what you’re talking about.”
Claire met his gaze.
“The affair is our marriage.
The folder belongs to my company.”
Martin photographed the folder, the bag, the seats, and the first-class boarding passes tucked inside the seat pocket.
Then he pulled on gloves and slid the folder into a clear evidence sleeve.
Chloe made a small sound when the cover became visible.
