She recognized the names immediately.

Margaret noticed.

Nathan did too.

He turned toward the employee.

“Please ask the household staff to meet in the sitting room after breakfast.”

Emily looked at him sharply.

“Nathan.”

“No spectacle,” he promised.

“Just the truth.”

An hour later, the same room where Margaret had humiliated Emily became the place where the rumor ended.

Nathan did not expose private documents or force Emily to recount her childhood.

He simply addressed the staff.

“For months, people in this house have repeated a claim about my wife.

Johnny, Paul, and Lily are not Emily’s children.

They are her younger siblings.

She has supported them because her family needed her.”

Several faces immediately dropped.

One employee whispered, “I didn’t know.”

Emily, standing beside Nathan, replied softly.

“That was the problem.”

Nobody needed more.

The employee who had first joked about the money-transfer envelopes approached Emily later in the kitchen.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily continued folding a towel before answering.

“Please don’t apologize because Nathan is your employer.”

“I’m not.”

Emily studied her face.

“Then don’t do it to the next person.”

The woman nodded.

Nathan’s friends learned more slowly.

One called him several days later and made another careless joke about raising three children.

Nathan interrupted.

“They’re her siblings.”

There was a pause.

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“I guess we got that wrong.”

“You didn’t get it wrong,” Nathan said.

“You repeated something you never knew.”

The distinction ended the joking.

Margaret was more complicated.

She did not transform overnight into a warm, apologetic mother-in-law.

Pride rarely disappeared that neatly.

For several days she avoided Emily.

Then one afternoon she found her in the library sorting receipts for another transfer to West Virginia.

Margaret stopped at the doorway.

“Is Lily the youngest?”

Emily looked up, surprised.

“Yes.”

“How old is she?”

Emily told her.

Margaret walked into the room.

“And Paul?”

Emily answered.

Margaret nodded slowly.

“I said something cruel about them.”
