“You were waiting for an excuse.”
“No.”
“You kept your father’s identity secret so you could trap me.”
I looked at the belt lying several feet away.
“You did not need my help creating this situation.”
Chloe stared at it too.
Something shifted in her face.
Until then she had treated my humiliation as entertainment because Julian had convinced her there would never be consequences.
Now the same man who had seemed untouchable was standing in a house he did not own, beside a company whose financing he did not control, arguing with the daughter of the billionaire he worshipped.
She began edging toward the staircase.
Julian noticed immediately.
“Where are you going?”
“I need my things.”
“You’re staying.”
Chloe gave him a look I had never seen before.
“Why?”
The question landed harder than shouting.
Julian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Rebecca closed the financing section of the folder and addressed me.
“Mrs.
Croft, your father has also arranged independent counsel.
They are on the way.
He asked me to tell you that no document you were pressured to sign tonight should be treated as valid until your attorney reviews it.”
Julian looked down at the agreement.
“You signed it.”
“I pressed my thumb against a page while injured and being threatened.”
“You signed it.”
Rebecca answered for me.
“Perhaps you should stop repeating that sentence until you have counsel of your own.”
His face tightened.
Then he reached for the only weapon of authority he believed he still had.
“I’ll call Miller.”
He dialed.
Nobody tried to stop him.
He put the call on speaker as though he expected an audience for his recovery.
“Chief, Julian Croft.
I have trespassers in my home and my wife is creating a disturbance.”
A tired voice answered after a moment.
“Mr.
Croft, I told you at the charity event that you could contact my office if you ever had a legitimate safety issue.
That does not make us friends.”
Julian froze.
“I need officers here.”
“If someone has been injured, call emergency services.
If there is a property dispute, your attorney can address it.
And do not use my name to threaten anybody.”
The call ended.
Chloe covered her mouth.
I almost laughed, but my body hurt too much.
Julian had spent years turning handshakes into friendships, introductions into alliances, and borrowed power into personal mythology.
Tonight each illusion was being stripped away one at a time.
He looked at me.
Really looked at me.
The expression on his face changed again.
Not remorse.
