“Victor, think.
We take the drive, we clean this up, and we handle Arthur properly.
You let those files go, federal agents will seize the docks.
The clubs.
The accounts.
Every politician who ever took a meeting will turn on you.”
Thirty-two seconds.
Sadie whispered, “Give me the laptop.”
Victor placed it in front of her.
Leon exhaled in relief.
Sadie lifted her shaking hand toward the keyboard.
Victor caught her wrist gently.
She froze.
For an instant, terror returned to her face.
Then Victor released her.
“You asked who I was,” he said.
Twenty-one seconds.
Leon shouted, “This is not the time for speeches.”
Victor ignored him.
“I could tell you I never ordered this.
I could tell you Leon betrayed me.
Both things are true, and neither changes what happened.
He used my name because I taught men to fear it.”
Sadie stared at him.
Sixteen seconds.
Victor closed the laptop enough that she could no longer reach the keyboard.
“Do not stop the release.”
Leon screamed.
Paul looked at Victor sharply.
“You understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
Ten seconds.
Leon fought so hard that the chair tipped.
Paul caught it before it struck the floor.
“You’ll lose everything!” Leon shouted.
Victor looked down at Sadie.
“I already lost the right to protect it.”
The countdown reached zero.
A quiet chime sounded.
Nothing exploded.
No alarms filled the warehouse.
The screen simply confirmed that encrypted copies had been delivered to several federal offices, two investigative newsrooms, and an attorney Arthur had contacted before disappearing.
The power in the room changed without anyone moving.
For years, Victor’s name had entered places before him.
It had opened doors, ended arguments, and made witnesses forget what they had seen.
Now his name was attached to files he could not retrieve.
Leon went limp in the chair.
Victor told Paul to call an ambulance for Sadie and give the dispatcher the real address.
Then he ordered Mick and Teeth to remain in the warehouse until law enforcement arrived.
“No stories,” he said.
“No missing evidence.
Tell them exactly what Leon ordered and exactly what you did.”
Mick stared at him.
“What happens to us?”
“That will be decided by people we cannot threaten.”
Paul asked, “And Leon?”
