Lena took her hand.
Then Boyd made a mistake.
He threatened Lena.
Not vaguely.
Not cleverly.
He shouted that this was all because of her, that she should never have interfered, and that when she came home she would learn what happened to daughters who turned mothers against their husbands.
The room became completely still.
Decker did not hang up.
Miriam held out her hand.
“Put that on speaker.”
Decker did.
Boyd repeated himself.
Lena’s heart pounded, but she did not speak.
Miriam quietly began taking notes.
Rhett’s face was unreadable.
Clara, however, looked different.
For years Boyd had always been careful after the worst moments.
He apologized.
He blamed alcohol.
He blamed bills.
He blamed stress.
He blamed Lena.
He blamed Clara.
But now, with strangers listening, he was exposing the part of himself he usually saved for closed doors.
“Boyd,” Clara said.
His voice stopped.
“You hit my daughter.”
“She got in the way.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Lena felt her fingers tighten.
Something inside her mother seemed to settle.
Not break.
Settle.
As if a decision had finally found solid ground.
“I’m not coming home,” Clara said.
Boyd laughed.
It was the same dismissive laugh Lena had heard throughout childhood whenever Clara threatened to leave.
“Where are you gonna go?”
Clara looked at the brass key on the table.
Then at Lena.
“Somewhere you aren’t.”
Boyd began shouting again.
Miriam ended the call.
Within hours, the attorney helped Clara make a formal report.
The doctor’s documentation, Lena’s injuries, Boyd’s threat, and Clara’s statement gave the authorities far more than the family had ever gathered before.
Rhett did not make Boyd disappear.
He did not order some cinematic punishment.
He used what he actually had: security, lawyers, witnesses, resources, and the ability to make sure two frightened women were no longer isolated.
That turned out to be enough to change everything.
The temporary protective order came first.
Then arrangements were made for Clara and Lena to retrieve essential belongings with lawful supervision rather than returning alone.
Boyd alternated between rage and apology.
He sent messages claiming Clara had misunderstood him.
Then he blamed Lena.
Then he claimed Rhett had manipulated them.
Then he begged.
