“What?” he asked.

“You can’t purchase your way through five missed years.”

He put his wallet away.

“Right.”

Then he sat on the floor and helped repair the toy.

That mattered more.

Weeks later, Eliza finally asked what his parents had said.

They were standing in the same public park where everything had begun.

The red kite had survived several crashes and one tree branch.

Peter and Logan were arguing over the spool while their brothers chased the tail.

Julian told her.

All of it.

When he finished, Eliza stared across the grass.

“Your mother really said they needed counsel?”

“Yes.”

A humorless smile touched her mouth.

“That’s exactly what I was afraid of.”

“I know.”

“And your father?”

“He still believes he was protecting me.”

Eliza nodded as if that confirmed something she had known for years.

Julian watched the boys.

“I told them they don’t meet the children unless you agree.”

Eliza turned toward him.

“You did?”

“They’re our sons.

But you were the one protecting them when I wasn’t there.

I’m not going to reward my family’s behavior by taking that protection away from you.”

Her eyes filled.

This time she didn’t hide it.

“I needed you to say things like that six years ago.”

“I know.”

“I might not have left.”

“I know.”

The old Julian would have told her he had changed.

He would have listed evidence, defended intentions, tried to earn forgiveness before she was ready to offer it.

Instead, he stood beside her and watched their sons destroy another attempt at launching the kite.

Finally Eliza said, “Peter keeps asking why you come around so much.”

Julian’s heart kicked hard against his ribs.

“What have you told him?”

“That you’re someone important to us.”

He looked at her.

“Are you ready to tell them?”

Eliza studied his face for several seconds.

“I’m ready to tell them the truth,” she said.

“I’m not promising what happens after that.”

“That’s enough.”

They called the boys over.

Four small bodies came running across the grass.

Peter reached them first, carrying the red kite under one arm.

“Are we in trouble?” he asked immediately.

“No,” Eliza said.

Logan pointed at Julian.

“Is he staying for dinner?”

Eliza took a slow breath.

Julian felt more nervous than he had before any boardroom decision in his life.
