Chapter 2 — He Whipped His Wife—Then Her Father’s Black Folder Opened

4.9Editorial score

“You are wearing Mrs.

Ashford Vale’s bracelet.”

Vanessa covered the emeralds with her hand.

“Adrian gave it to me.”

“It belonged to Elena’s mother.

It was removed from a locked jewelry cabinet this afternoon.

The cabinet logs every entry.”

Vanessa glanced at Adrian.

That glance told me everything.

She had expected him to protect her, and he had expected his name to protect them both.

Mara nodded to one of the security officers.

He crossed the room and stood beside Vanessa.

“Take it off,” he said.

“Do not touch me.”

“Then remove it yourself.”

Her fingers shook as she opened the clasp.

She placed the bracelet on the table as though it had suddenly become dangerous.

Mrs.

Bell picked it up and brought it to me.

My mother had worn that bracelet in the last photograph taken before her death.

I closed my fingers around it, feeling the familiar edges press into my palm.

Adrian watched me.

For the first time, he appeared uncertain.

“Elena,” he said, changing his tone, “we need to speak privately.”

I looked at the riding crop still lying on the floor.

“You already said everything privately enough.

You just happened to invite an audience.”

A few guests flinched.

Mara continued through the folder.

The next section contained records of company transfers to a luxury apartment registered to Vanessa Cole, payments for jewelry, travel, designer clothing, and a private medical clinic.

The money had not come from Adrian’s salary.

It had been disguised as consulting fees and drawn from a subsidiary funded by one of the Ashford-backed loans.

Daniel stepped closer to the documents.

“I questioned these invoices,” he said.

“Adrian told me they covered international strategy services.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“I am a consultant.”

“What strategy did you provide?” Mara asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth but produced no answer.

Adrian slammed his hand against the table.

“Enough.

Those expenditures were authorized.”

“By you,” Daniel said quietly.

“Without board approval.”

The room fell silent again, but this silence had changed.

Earlier, it had protected Adrian.

Now it was closing around him.

His phone rang.

He ignored it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang, followed by those of the board members.

Daniel answered first.

His face tightened as he listened.

“The emergency board session has reached quorum,” he said.

“They have suspended Adrian as chief executive pending investigation.”

“They cannot vote without me,” Adrian snapped.

“The voting proxies held by the Ashford trust were activated when the default notices were issued.”
