Chapter 3 — Her Groom Sold Her—Then Her Father’s Letter Made the Mafia King Go Pale

4.9Editorial score

You were too cowardly to separate my father from me.

So the two of you made a bargain about a woman neither of you had the right to bargain with.”

Raphael’s face became unreadable.

“Turn the car around,” he said.

The driver did not immediately respond.

Raphael’s voice sharpened.

“Now.”

The SUV changed lanes.

Angela stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“Keeping a promise late.”

“That doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

It was the first answer he had given her that sounded entirely honest.

Angela looked back at the letter.

There was still another paragraph.

Her father wrote that if Raphael ever received the letter, it would probably mean someone else had found it first.

He warned Raphael not to trust anyone who claimed Angela knew where the money was.

She had never been told.

Keeping her ignorant had been deliberate.

Angela’s throat tightened.

For twenty years she had believed her father had vanished without trusting her enough to explain why.

Now she understood that silence had been the one protection he thought he could still give her.

It did not make his disappearance painless.

It did not excuse the theft.

But it changed the shape of the wound.

At the bottom, beneath his signature, her father had added one final note.

“Tell Angela I did not leave because she was easy to abandon.

I left because she was the only person I could not bear to bury with my mistakes.”

Angela stopped reading.

She pressed the heel of her hand against her mouth.

She had refused to cry in the bridal suite.

She had refused while Raphael carried her through the hotel.

She had refused while looking at photographs of Johnny with another woman.

But this broke through.

One tear fell onto the white skirt of her wedding dress.

Raphael watched it land.

He said nothing.

For once, that was the correct choice.

When the SUV returned to the hotel, the entrance was chaos.

Guests clustered behind the glass doors.

Miranda stood outside with her phone in one hand and Angela’s shoes in the other.

The moment the SUV stopped, she ran toward it.

Angela opened the door herself.

Miranda grabbed her.

“Oh my God.

Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did they—”

“I’m okay.”

Miranda looked past her toward Raphael with a hatred so pure that even he seemed to respect it.

Then Miranda whispered, “Johnny came back.”

Angela went still.

“Where is he?”

“In the bridal suite.

He says there’s been a misunderstanding.”
