“Tonight he gave me evidence and let me choose.
You gave me lies and expected obedience.
Do not compare yourself to him again.”
Adrian went pale.
For years, he had relied on Isabella’s instinct to smooth every conflict.
He had mistaken her restraint for surrender.
He had never considered what would happen when she used that restraint against him.
She removed her wedding ring.
She did not throw it.
She did not create a scene he could later describe as hysterical.
She placed it on top of the photograph and slid both toward him.
“Leave.”
Adrian looked around the room.
No one defended him.
Several executives avoided his gaze.
One of the wives near the bar stared at the makeup on his collar with open disgust.
“You’ll regret doing this publicly,” he whispered.
Isabella met his eyes.
“You did it publicly.
I simply stopped hiding it.”
Lorenzo signaled toward the ballroom entrance.
Two security officers appeared, silent and professional.
Adrian saw them and laughed bitterly.
“Of course.
The great Lorenzo Volkov sends guards to fight his battles.”
“They are not here to fight,” Lorenzo said.
“They are here to prevent you from confusing rejection with permission to remain.”
Adrian left without another word.
The doors closed behind him.
Only then did Isabella realize the room was still silent.
She inhaled slowly.
“The dessert service is seven minutes behind,” she said.
For one stunned second, no one moved.
Then Lorenzo laughed.
It was not loud, but half the room looked startled simply because they had never heard it before.
“You heard her,” he told the staff.
“Seven minutes.”
The room came back to life.
Music resumed.
Plates arrived.
Conversations began in cautious fragments before growing louder.
Isabella sat beside the most feared man in the city and ate three bites of chocolate cake while her marriage ended.
Lorenzo did not ask whether she was all right.
He knew she was not.
Instead, he said, “My attorney can recommend someone who specializes in complex divorces.
No obligation.
No favors owed.”
“I can find my own attorney.”
“I know.”
“Then why offer?”
“Because competent people still deserve support.”
She looked at him.
“You really should have told me sooner.”
“Yes.”
“I may stay angry for a while.”
“Take as long as necessary.”
