Chapter 3 — Her Son’s Rare Blood Summoned the Father She Escaped

4.9Editorial score

The first was to the attorney who had kept copies of her evidence for years.

Elena had never filed a public case because every filing risked revealing where Adrian lived.

Instead, the attorney had maintained a sealed evidence package and instructions for the day Rafael found them.

The second call was to the police.

Elena reported the lockdown, Rafael’s declaration that Adrian would leave with him, and the private guards positioned in the corridor.

Then she waited.

The first bag of Rafael’s blood reached Trauma Room Three.

Adrian’s pressure rose slightly.

The surgical team moved him upstairs.

Elena walked beside the gurney until the operating-room doors stopped her.

Adrian’s eyelids fluttered.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

“Who was talking?”

Elena glanced back at Rafael, who had emerged from the donor room with a bandage around his arm.

“Someone who had the blood you needed.”

Adrian’s fingers tightened weakly around hers.

“Are you coming?”

“As far as they let me.”

He disappeared through the doors.

Rafael approached slowly.

Up close, he looked less invincible than Elena remembered.

There was gray near his temples.

His face was pale from the donation, and the hand holding his jacket trembled once before he forced it still.

“You should have told me,” he said.

“So you could take him?”

“So I could know him.”

“You prepared a custody case before he was born.”

“I was protecting my child.”

“You called me optional.”

Rafael lowered his voice.

“You stole seven years from me.”

Elena felt the old instinct to defend, explain, and soften her words.

She let it pass.

“I spent seven years making sure Adrian was not raised by a man who considered his mother disposable.”

Rafael’s representative opened the blue folder and scanned the first pages.

“These documents were taken from a private office,” he said.

“Their use may constitute theft.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then explain them in court.”

Rafael gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Court?”

The elevator opened again.

Two police officers stepped out with a hospital administrator and Elena’s attorney, who had driven directly from her office after their call.

Rafael’s smile vanished.

The attorney walked to Elena, placed a hand on the blue folder, and said, “The emergency petition has been filed.

The hospital preserved the security calls and corridor audio.”

Rafael turned toward the administrator.

“You recorded me?”

“The lockdown system records every command,” she replied.

“It is designed for donor protection, not custody enforcement.

Your instruction to prevent Ms.

Marino and her child from leaving exceeded the protocol.”

For the first time, Rafael appeared uncertain.

The private system he had activated to trap Elena had documented his threat, identified his location, and delivered him to the evidence he believed she would never use.

He tried to regain control.
