Chapter 4 — His Boss Exposed the Lie—Then Daniel Opened a Birth Certificate

4.9Editorial score

It was the silence of a person measuring how much truth had already escaped.

“Where are you?” Richard asked.

“Haven House.

I have the birth certificate.

I have Mom’s letter.

The DNA result came back.”

Richard exhaled sharply.

“That woman had no right to interfere with your life.”

Marian turned her face toward the phone.

“It was my life too, Richard.”

His voice hardened.

“She gave you away, Daniel.

Eleanor was your mother.

Don’t let a sick woman rewrite history because she wants absolution.”

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“Did you destroy her letters?”

Richard did not answer.

“Did you tell me she stopped caring?”

“I protected this family.”

“By lying to me for thirty-nine years?”

“By giving you a stable home.

You had good parents, opportunities and a future.

What exactly do you think you were deprived of?”

Daniel looked at Marian.

“The right to know who I was.”

Richard’s restraint broke.

He accused Marian of being selfish.

He accused Eleanor of becoming sentimental before her death.

He told Daniel that exposing the truth would confuse Owen and Lily and stain Eleanor’s memory.

Then he made the mistake that ended any doubt about his role.

“Your mother and I agreed that Marian’s name would never enter your house.

I expect you to honor that.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

For two days, he had looked like a frightened boy searching for answers.

Now he looked like a father.

“You don’t get to decide what enters my house anymore.”

He ended the call.

Marian began to cry without making a sound.

Daniel sat beside her and held the hand she offered him.

It was the first time I saw him touch her.

I stepped into the corridor and found Owen and Lily approaching with the volunteer.

Lily carried a picture she had drawn.

Owen held the shopping bag containing his building set.

“Is Dad here?” Lily asked.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

Both children ran to him.

He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around them.

Owen asked why he had missed their calls.

Lily asked whether we were getting divorced.

Daniel looked at me before answering.

“I made a bad choice,” he said.

“I lied to Mom because I was scared to tell the truth.

She has every right to be angry with me.”

“But are you getting divorced?” Lily insisted.

“That’s something your mother and I will talk about privately.

But whatever happens, we both love you.”
