Chapter 6 — His Pregnant Mistress Smiled—Until Madison Opened the Lab Report

4.9Editorial score

“You told me it was mine.”

“I told you what you needed to hear because you kept making promises and then hiding behind your wife.”

Madison felt something unexpectedly sharp at that sentence.

Not sympathy for Nathaniel.

Recognition.

Veronica had identified his weakness perfectly.

He wanted every world at once.

A wife polished enough for boardrooms.

A mistress exciting enough to flatter him.

A child that made him feel powerful.

A corporation rich enough to fund the consequences.

And no cost attached to any choice.

Nathaniel gripped the phone.

“You lied to me.”

Veronica laughed softly.

“So did you.”

The line disconnected.

Nathaniel stood motionless.

Madison did not comfort him.

The betrayal he had suffered did not erase the betrayal he had committed.

Within twenty minutes, two members of Pierce Global’s audit committee arrived on the forty-sixth floor with outside counsel.

Nathaniel tried once to order them out.

Nobody moved.

That was the moment his power truly began to change.

The committee did not care who had kissed whom at a traffic light.

They cared about the transfer.

They cared about the Aspen calendar entries.

They cared about whether corporate funds had been used for personal purposes and whether records had been mischaracterized.

Nathaniel insisted it was an accounting mistake.

Then he claimed an assistant had selected the wrong account.

Then he said the payment was related to consulting services.

Madison watched each explanation contradict the one before it.

Outside counsel took notes.

The audit chair asked Nathaniel to surrender authorization over the disputed account pending review.

Nathaniel refused.

The chair reminded him that refusal itself would be recorded.

He surrendered it.

By evening, the transfer was frozen and a formal independent review had begun.

No one declared Nathaniel ruined.

No one dramatically stripped him of his fortune in a single afternoon.

Reality was slower than that.

But his access to certain executive funds was restricted.

His role in the Aspen transaction was suspended.

The board instructed outside counsel to preserve emails, calendars, expense records, and authorization logs.

For a man who had built his identity around unquestioned control, procedure was its own punishment.

Veronica attempted to contact Madison twice that night.

Madison declined both calls.

The next morning, Veronica sent one message.

He lied to both of us.

Madison read it without answering.

That might have been true.

It did not make them allies.

Veronica had deliberately humiliated her.

She had sent the ultrasound.

She had recorded the cruel message.

She had stared through the windshield and mouthed He’s mine because she wanted Madison wounded enough to force Nathaniel’s hand.
