Chapter 7 — His Pregnant Wife Took the USB He Thought No One Knew Existed

4.9Editorial score

No screaming relatives.

No dramatic confrontation.

She handed the baby to him after confirming the arrangements with the supervising professional.

For one second their eyes met.

Evan wanted to say he was sorry.

He had said it through attorneys.

He had written it in a letter Lily never answered.

He had rehearsed better versions in the car.

But standing there, every apology sounded designed to improve his own pain.

So he said only, “Thank you.”

Lily gave a small nod.

Then she stepped back.

Evan looked down at the child in his arms.

Tiny fingers closed around one of his.

He felt no victory.

No redemption.

Only responsibility.

And, for once, he understood that responsibility was not something a wealthy man could delegate to an assistant, a lawyer, a mother, or a signed page.

Months earlier, Lily had left her ring on the kitchen island because the marriage had already become something Evan displayed more carefully than he lived.

She took the USB because evidence was the one language his world could not dismiss as emotion.

And she disappeared because she finally understood that keeping herself and her child safe required more than asking Evan to become the man he had spent years pretending to be.

She had not destroyed him.

She had opened the folder.

Everything that followed had been inside it already.
