Mara saw the movement.
She flinched.
He immediately opened his hand.
That tiny reaction nearly broke his control more than the records had.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
A humorless breath escaped her.
“I did.
Once.”
Dante waited.
“I told Gavin I would leave.
I photographed what he’d done to me.
I recorded him threatening me.
I copied messages.
I thought if I had proof, I could walk away safely.”
Dante glanced toward the clause he had printed from the divorce agreement.
All private recordings, copies, photographs, and personal documentation relating to the marital residence.
Now the language made sense.
“He found out,” Dante said.
Mara nodded.
“He found one of the recordings.
After that, everything changed.”
She finally sat.
Her hands remained clenched in her lap.
“Gavin didn’t need to threaten me himself anymore.
His lawyers did it politely.
They said if I accused him publicly, they’d destroy my reputation.
They said people would call me unstable, vindictive, greedy.
They had statements prepared from people who had seen us at dinners and charity events and thought we looked happy.”
Dante remembered the immaculate divorce file.
Quiet wife.
Quiet husband.
Quiet settlement.
Silence polished until it looked respectable.
“Your job?” he asked.
Mara swallowed.
“The school started asking questions because I kept missing days.
I couldn’t explain why.
Gavin didn’t want anyone looking too closely, so I resigned.
His attorneys arranged the settlement immediately afterward.”
“And the nondisclosure agreement.”
“Yes.”
“Why sign it?”
She looked at him then.
There was no accusation in her face, only exhaustion.
“Because I wanted out.”
Dante felt the simplicity of those words like a blade.
He had spent his entire life around powerful men.
Men who talked about loyalty, reputation, family names, and business interests while using money to make inconvenient truths disappear.
He understood them perfectly.
That was why his anger frightened even him.
“What happened to the evidence?” he asked.
“Most of it was destroyed.”
“Most?”
Mara’s eyes shifted to the folder.
Dante noticed.
“Mara.”
