Chapter 1 — I Heard My Daughter Beg a Man to Stop—Then She Named Her Mother

4.9Editorial score

The closet door scraped against the frame as I pushed it open.

The man in the hallway stopped moving.

For one second, nobody spoke.

Lily stood several feet behind him near my bedroom doorway, both hands wrapped around herself.

Her face was wet.

The man held a brass house key between two fingers.

My phone was still recording.

I recognized him before he said a word.

I had seen his face once on a framed staff photograph Maria had brought home from the dental clinic Christmas party.

Dr.

Keller.

Maria’s boss.

His expression changed quickly.

Shock first.

Then calculation.

“Michael,” he said.

The fact that he knew my name made something cold settle inside me.

I kept the phone at my side.

“How did you get into my house?”

He glanced toward Lily.

Wrong move.

I stepped between them.

“How did you get into my house?” I asked again.

Keller raised the key.

“Maria gave it to me.”

Behind me, Lily made a small sound.

I didn’t turn around because I knew if I saw her face, I might stop thinking clearly.

Keller started talking quickly.

“This isn’t what you think.

There’s been a misunderstanding involving clinic records, and Lily has information she shouldn’t have.”

“She’s fifteen.”

“I know how old she is.”

“Then explain why she’s crying in my bedroom while you’re holding my house key.”

His jaw tightened.

“I came to retrieve confidential material.”

“You came into my house without me knowing.”

“Your wife knew.”

There it was again.

Not an accusation.

Not a guess.

A fact he expected to protect him.

I heard Lily whisper behind me.

“Dad.”

I turned then.

She was staring at my phone.

“Are you recording?”

“Yes.”

Keller’s face changed again.

“Turn that off.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He took one step forward.

I didn’t raise my voice.

I didn’t threaten him.

I simply held the phone higher where he could see the timer moving.

“Stay where you are.”
