Chapter 10 — My Brother Hid Me at the Kids’ Table—Then His CEO Found Me

4.9Editorial score

I didn’t need to become louder than Caleb.

I didn’t need to list clients at family dinners or turn every success into a performance.

I simply stopped shrinking when people asked what I did.

Months later, Nebula renewed my consulting agreement.

Caleb remained at the company, farther from the executive spotlight than he wanted but doing solid work under a manager who no longer indulged his obsession with visibility.

We were both at our parents’ house when the renewal came through.

My phone buzzed once.

I glanced at the message and smiled.

Caleb noticed.

“Good news?”

“Yeah.”

He waited.

The old version of him would have asked whether it was a real contract, whether it was stable, whether the client was important.

Instead he said, “Congratulations.”

No ranking.

No comparison.

Just congratulations.

Later that evening, Mom brought out dessert and accidentally handed Caleb the smallest chair from the kitchen because the dining set was one seat short.

He looked at it.

Then at me.

I raised an eyebrow.

He groaned.

“Don’t.”

I smiled.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were thinking it.”

“I absolutely was.”

And this time, when the whole family laughed, nobody was being humiliated.

Not even him.
