Chapter 2 — My Daughter-in-Law Scheduled My Life—Then My Bank Exposed Her Access

4.9Editorial score

Print statements.

Document charges.

Stop explaining.

When I ended the call, I expected to cry.

I didn’t.

I opened Richard’s letter instead.

Don’t disappear inside other people’s lives.

I laid it beside the laptop.

Then Ethan called again.

This time, I answered.

“Mom, finally.”

His voice carried the irritation of a man who believed the emergency was still my absence.

“We had to scramble this morning.

Brittany nearly missed work.”

“I know.”

“You know?”

“I just spoke to my bank.”

There was a pause.

Not a long one.

But long enough.

“What does your bank have to do with anything?”

I looked at the childcare charge on my screen.

“You tell me.”

Another silence.

Then he exhaled sharply.

“Mom, if this is about the sitter, Brittany had to book somebody at the last minute.”

The sentence hit me harder than a denial would have.

He knew.

I closed my eyes.

“With my card?”

“We were going to handle it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“Mom—”

“Did you use my card to pay for childcare because I wasn’t there to provide it for free?”

He hesitated.

Then Brittany’s voice appeared in the background.

“Give me the phone.”

A second later she was speaking.

“Paula, this is getting ridiculous.

You left without warning when we had already made plans around you.”

“You made plans for me.”

“You knew we depended on you.”

“And that gives you access to my bank account?”

“It was one charge.”

I looked at months of transactions.

“No,” I said.

“It wasn’t.”

For the first time since the calls began, Brittany stopped talking.

I continued.

“The bank showed me other purchases connected to the same stored payment information.

Groceries.

Meal deliveries.

Children’s expenses.

Things I never approved.”

“They were for the family.”

There it was.
