The side door opened.

Emily stepped into the ballroom.

No one spoke.

My mother’s face changed before she could control it.

Shock came first.

Then calculation.

Then rage.

Emily walked slowly toward the table.

The bruises on her face were visible beneath the chandelier light.

She stopped beside the framed wedding photograph Victoria had displayed.

“Hello, Victoria.”

My mother gripped the back of her chair.

“You are not Emily.”

“You said that would be your first defense.”

“Daniel hired you.

This is fraud.”

The agent placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside was the brass key.

“This key opened an archive at a property outside Boston,” he said.

“Agents recovered medical records documenting Mrs.

Kincaid’s confinement and childbirth.

We also recovered surveillance footage showing your visits.”

Victoria looked around the table, searching for an ally.

“Those records can be manufactured.”

“We found Dr.

Carter,” the agent replied.

“He is cooperating.”

That landed.

Her knees seemed to weaken, but she remained standing.

“Carter is a coward and a liar.”

“He says you paid him to falsify the dental comparison used to identify the body recovered from the vehicle.”

“He is protecting himself.”

“He also provided the original dental images and the altered set submitted to police.”

Victoria turned to me.

“Daniel, listen to me.

Whatever she told you, she was manipulating you from the beginning.

Your father knew it.

I protected you.”

Emily’s restraint finally cracked.

“You locked me in a room while I gave birth.”

“Because you were going to take everything!”

The admission exploded through the ballroom.

Victoria heard it too late.

She tried to pull the words back.

“I mean she threatened this family.

She threatened the company.

She knew the will gave her control if something happened to Daniel.

She wanted an heir so she could own all of you.”

“You kidnapped her because of my father’s will,” I said.

“I saved your life.”

“You told me she was dead.”

“You were becoming weak around her! You questioned me.

You delayed decisions.

You spoke about changing the trust.

I built this family after your father died, and she arrived expecting to inherit it.”

Emily stepped closer.
