But to Emma, until that moment, he had simply been a famous stranger.

I took her hand.

“He was my husband.”

Her eyes widened.

Then she looked at Ryan.

At herself.

Back at me.

Children can understand an entire disaster before adults finish explaining it.

“No,” she whispered.

I could not lie to her.

“He is your biological father.”

Emma pulled her hand away, not angrily, but as though she needed both hands to hold onto the edges of her chair.

Ryan made a sound behind me.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

He stopped speaking.

For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Ryan Miller had no idea what words could buy him a better outcome.

Michelle stepped between the tables.

“This doesn’t prove he’s her father,” she said.

Her voice was controlled, but there was panic beneath it now.

I stood.

“No.

The letter proves I tried to tell him I was pregnant.”

Ryan was still staring at the returned envelope.

“I didn’t refuse this.”

I looked at him.

“Your office did.”

“I would never have told them to refuse something like this.”

“You told them to refuse everything from me.”

His eyes lifted.

That memory arrived slowly, then all at once.

During the divorce, Ryan had wanted a clean break.

He had been furious whenever I called.

He told me communication would go through attorneys and instructed the front desk at his office and residence not to accept personal deliveries from me.

At the time, it had been another display of finality.

He wanted me erased quickly and efficiently.

He had succeeded better than he intended.

“I went to your building first,” I said.

“Security would not let me upstairs.

I called.

My number was blocked.

I sent that certified letter because I thought someone would have to put it in your hands.”

Ryan looked again at the word on the envelope.

Refused.

“I sent another ordinary letter afterward,” I continued.

“I never received an answer.

By then the divorce was moving forward, and every message coming through your attorneys made it clear that you wanted no personal contact.”

His face tightened.

“Why didn’t your lawyer tell mine?”

“Because by the time I confirmed the pregnancy, I had stopped trusting anything connected to you with information about my child.”

Michelle crossed her arms.

“Convenient.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Michelle.”

“No, Ryan.

Think about this.
