David’s attention sharpened.

‘There is a pending movement connected to the card?’

No one answered.

He turned to his monitor and began typing.

Chloe moved toward the desk, but he raised one hand.

‘Stay where you are.’

The transaction history loaded.

Most of the available credit had already been used or directed toward expenses connected to Chloe’s planned business.

A final transfer request had triggered an internal review because it did not fit my normal account activity.

That review was why David had called me at seven in the morning.

The family had arrived before me because the bank had contacted the number on the fraudulent application first.

My mother’s number.

She had received the warning and brought Richard and Chloe to the branch, expecting to manage me before I learned the details.

David canceled the pending movement and added it to the incident record.

Chloe’s face drained of color.

‘You can’t cancel that.

I signed a commitment.’

‘Using funds connected to an account Sloan says she did not authorize,’ David replied.

‘My business could collapse.’

I looked at her.

‘That was a risk you took with my name.’

Beatrice abandoned the gentle tone she had used in the lobby.

‘After everything we have done for you, you would destroy your sister over paperwork?’

‘You altered my identification.’

‘I corrected an address.’

‘You forged my signature.’

‘I signed because you were unavailable.’

The room became completely still.

David did not need to ask another question.

My mother had moved from denying the act to justifying it in less than a minute.

He wrote her statement into the incident notes and asked her to repeat it.

She realized what she had said.

‘I did not mean that literally.’

‘Which part?’ he asked.

Richard reached for her arm.

‘Say nothing else.’

David called the bank’s fraud department and requested security at the office.

His voice remained calm as he provided the account number, the amount, and the names of the people present.

My father turned on me.

‘Are you satisfied?’

I signed the fraud declaration with my real signature.

‘No,’ I said.

‘I’m protected.’

Two security employees arrived moments later.

They did not touch anyone.

They simply stood at the open office door while David explained that the card was frozen, the pending transaction had been stopped, and the matter would be referred for formal investigation.

Beatrice gathered her handbag with trembling hands.

‘Sloan, come home with us.

We can discuss this without an audience.’

‘There was no audience when you applied in my name.

You still did it.’

Chloe began to cry, but even then her anger was aimed at the interruption of her plans rather than at what she had done.

‘You have ruined everything.’

‘No.

I arrived before you could finish.’

They were escorted from the office.
