Chapter 7 — My Family Made Me Serve the Billionaire Holding My Father’s Future

4.9Editorial score

No powerful guest.

Nothing he could gain from saying it.

For the first time, I believed he understood what an apology was supposed to cost.

Alexander and I married the following autumn in the courtyard of the hotel where we first met.

The ceremony was small.

My family attended, but none of them were given special roles they had not earned.

My mother did not control the seating chart.

Vanessa did not become the center of every photograph.

Logan did not make a speech.

My father walked beside me only because I asked him to, and halfway down the aisle, I took Alexander’s hand and walked the remaining steps on my own.

At the reception, I sat at the center of the table.

A plate was placed in front of me while the food was still warm.

No one rang a bell.

No one asked me to stay useful.

Alexander leaned close and kissed my knuckles, just as he had in my parents’ kitchen.

“Sorry, darling,” he whispered.

“I was late.”

This time, I smiled.

“You arrived exactly when I needed you.”

But even as I said it, I knew the deepest truth.

He had opened the door, but I was the one who had finally walked through it.
