Chapter 3 — My Family Used My Vacation to Steal My Identity—Then I Opened the Folder

That question changed the temperature in the room.

Until then, they had been looking at the situation as a family disaster.

A house.

Money.

Forged authority.

Betrayal.

But the restricted files were not a family matter they could settle over dinner.

I looked at Vance.

He already knew that.

“I reported the access,” I said.

Evelyn went white.

Mom’s crying stopped.

Vance leaned forward for the first time.

“When?”

It was almost funny that he asked.

Not whether.

When.

I did not give him details he did not need.

I simply said, “Before I walked through that door.”

His eyes moved toward the front windows.

That tiny movement told me more than any confession could have.

“You set me up,” he said.

“No,” I replied.

“You brought the cases into my house.”

“You watched me.”

“Yes.”

“You let it continue.”

“I collected evidence of what you chose to do.”

He stood.

Dad stood too.

For one strange second, the two men faced each other across my birthday table with candles still burning between them.

“Sit down,” Dad said.

Vance laughed under his breath.

“You don’t get to give me orders.”

Dad’s expression hardened.

“You involved my daughter in this.”

I looked at him.

“Which daughter?”

That stopped him.

Because Evelyn had not been dragged into the plan against her will.

She had helped send me away.

Dad had known.

Mom had known.

They had all decided some amount of harm to me was acceptable.

They simply disagreed now about how much.

I opened the third folder.

This one was for Evelyn.

I slid it across the table.

She did not touch it at first.

“What?” she whispered.

“Open it.”

Her fingers trembled as she lifted the cover.

The first documents showed the financial trail I had found connected to the pending four hundred fifty thousand dollars.

The next pages showed arrangements Vance had been making for after the transfer.

Then she reached the page that changed her face completely.

A departure booking.
