The judge’s expression changed—not dramatically, but enough that I noticed.
He turned to the clerk.
“Preserve a copy of the original file.
Do not alter the device.”
Then he looked at Mark’s attorney.
“I’ll allow this to continue for the limited purpose of determining what the child says she personally recorded.
We can address additional evidentiary objections as necessary.”
Margaret was already taking notes.
The video resumed.
Kelly’s recorded voice repeated the question that had apparently started the argument.
“You’re using custody as leverage against Emily?”
Mark answered without hesitation.
“I’m making sure she stops fighting me on everything else.”
My stomach twisted.
Everything else.
The divorce.
The house.
Money.
The humiliation of watching him walk into court with Kelly beside him.
But the next sentence was worse.
Kelly said, “She’s Lily’s mother.”
“I know who she is.”
“And Lily loves her.”
Mark gave another dismissive laugh.
“That’s why it works.”
I stopped breathing for a moment.
Beside me, Margaret whispered, “Stay still.”
I hadn’t realized I was beginning to rise from my chair.
I sat back down.
On-screen, the camera still showed only the hallway and a thin slice of the kitchen.
Then a shadow crossed the floor.
Mark’s voice became sharper.
“If Emily thinks she could lose Lily, she’ll panic.
She already cries all the time.
She gets flustered.
Put her in front of a judge like that and she’ll look exactly the way my attorney says she looks.”
My face burned.
That explained the strategy.
Every letter designed to frighten me.
Every accusation that seemed absurdly extreme.
Every demand delivered with just enough cruelty to make me react.
They hadn’t merely observed my distress.
Mark had been counting on it.
Kelly lowered her voice.
“And what happens if you actually get primary custody?”
There was a pause.
Mark said, “We’ll deal with that after the order is signed.”
Kelly sounded stunned.
“She’s your daughter, Mark.”
“I said I’ll deal with it.”
The courtroom was silent enough that I could hear the faint hum of the monitor.
Then the recording changed.
The picture jolted as though Lily had picked up the tablet.
For half a second, the camera caught Mark standing in the kitchen doorway.
His face was tense.
Kelly was behind him.
