I answered.

“Because Richard paid for your personal life with company money.”

“Those were authorized benefits.”

“Some were.

Many weren’t.”

Richard snapped, “Enough.”

Jessica looked at him.

“You told me everything was approved.”

That sentence changed the room.

Richard turned slowly toward her.

“Don’t start.”

“I’m not starting anything.

You said the apartment was part of my compensation.”

“Jessica.”

“And you said the trust was already arranged.”

The attorney began taking notes.

Richard noticed.

“Stop writing.”

No one stopped.

By then, his problem was larger than infidelity.

He had spent years believing every person around him depended on his version of events.

But Jessica had her own version.

The accountants had records.

The doctors had records.

I had records.

And records did not care who owned the loudest voice.

The paternity tests were performed through an accredited laboratory agreed upon by counsel.

Richard tried to delay the results meeting twice.

On the third scheduled date, he arrived fifteen minutes early.

Jessica arrived separately.

I almost felt sorry for her when she sat down.

Almost.

The attorney opened the sealed results.

Richard stared at the envelope.

“Just say it.”

The attorney did.

Richard was excluded as the biological father of both children.

No one spoke.

Jessica closed her eyes.

Richard did not look at her.

He looked at me.

And somehow, even then, he tried to make the truth my offense.

“You knew this would happen.”

“I knew what your medical report said.

I did not know who fathered those children.”

He turned on Jessica.

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“Richard—”

“Who is their father?”

“That is not the issue we’re discussing.”

“It is the only issue.”

Jessica’s composure finally cracked.

“No.

The issue is that you never asked questions when the answers made you feel important.”

Richard stared at her.
