Chapter 5 — My Husband Smiled After Betraying Me—Then the Black Folder Arrived

4.9Editorial score

I had softened questions.

I had accepted incomplete answers so we could get back to being pleasant.

That morning, I let the silence sit on his chest.

Ryan broke first.

“I was going to replace it.”

Elaine closed her eyes.

Marlene asked, “Replace how much?”

He did not answer.

She already knew.

The number was high enough that my stomach turned when she said it aloud, but not high enough to ruin us permanently if I acted quickly.

Most of the money had come from savings we had built together.

Some had passed through accounts connected to the Mercer family business and would have to be reconciled separately.

Marlene had already advised Elaine to freeze Ryan’s discretionary access to the family accounts pending a formal review.

That was why Ryan recognized the black folder.

It contained the records he had hoped no one would assemble in one place.

I reached into the drawer again and took out the apartment key.

Ryan stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your jacket pocket last week.

I thought it was for work.”

Lauren looked at him.

“You told me you lost that key.”

I almost smiled.

Even his smaller lies had begun colliding now.

I put the key beside the lease.

“I’m done protecting your secrets from each other.”

Lauren’s face crumpled.

“Emma, I know sorry doesn’t fix this.”

“No.

It doesn’t.”

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“You warned him to come back before his wife woke up.

You knew exactly where the hurt was going.”

She had no answer.

The first tears finally rolled down her cheeks.

I felt no triumph.

That surprised me.

For hours I had imagined confrontation as something hot and explosive.

Instead it felt clinical.

The people I loved had become facts I had to process.

Ryan tried another approach.

He pulled out a chair across from me.

“Emma, look at me.

We can fix this.”

I did.

He leaned forward.

“I screwed up.

Badly.

I know that.

But seven years has to mean more than one terrible period.”

Lauren made a wounded sound beside the counter.

Ryan ignored her.

That told me everything about the future she thought she was getting.

“How long?” I asked.

“What?”
