Officer Reed held out his hand, but I did not give him my phone immediately.
I looked at Preston first.
For nine years, I had watched that man survive difficult moments by changing the meaning of what had happened.
A forgotten anniversary became my unreasonable expectation.
Missing money became my confusion.
Brooke became a “friend” until the photograph of her pregnant belly appeared for everyone to see.
Now, standing beneath the fluorescent lights of St.
Catherine’s Medical Center, he was trying the same thing with a traffic collision.
Only this time, there was a recording.
“Mrs.
Bennett?” Officer Reed repeated.
“Yes.”
I opened the cloud-storage folder and selected the file timestamped 11:38 a.m.
Preston took half a step forward.
His mother caught his sleeve.
“Don’t,” Vivian whispered.
That one word told me everything.
She knew enough to be afraid.
I handed the phone to Officer Reed.
The hallway had gone strangely quiet.
The nurse who had been pretending not to listen was now staring openly.
The security officer remained between Preston and me.
Brooke sat rigidly on the bench, both hands wrapped protectively around her stomach.
Officer Reed pressed play.
At first there was only the faint hum of the Mercedes starting.
Then Preston’s voice came through the speaker.
“Here.
Take Madison’s car.”
Brooke laughed nervously.
“I told you, my license is still suspended.”
The words landed in the hallway like a dropped plate.
Brooke closed her eyes.
Officer Reed glanced at her, then back at the phone.
Preston’s recorded voice continued.
“You’re driving ten minutes, not crossing the country.
Stop worrying.”
“I shouldn’t.”
“You’re pregnant.
Nobody’s going to make a big deal out of it.”
Then Brooke asked the question I had replayed three times before leaving my office.
“What if something happens?”
There was a pause.
Then my husband answered.
“The car is in Madison’s name.
Insurance too.
If there’s a problem, I’ll say she was driving.”
Nobody spoke.
Not the nurse.
Not Vivian.
Not Brooke.
Even Preston looked as if he had forgotten how to breathe.
Officer Reed stopped the recording.
“Mr.
Bennett,” he said, “did you give Ms.
Lawson the keys to this vehicle knowing her license was suspended?”
Preston recovered faster than I expected.
