The ceremony cannot proceed.
Andrew stared at the silver oak leaves waiting on the table.
“You cannot suspend this based on accusations delivered minutes before the event.”
“I can postpone a ceremonial pinning,” the senior officer replied.
“The underlying personnel action will be reviewed through proper channels.”
“You know my record.”
“I know the record that was placed before me.
I now have additional information.”
Serena’s phone vibrated for the third time.
She read the notification and made a small choking sound.
“What?” Andrew demanded.
“My credit facility has been frozen.”
“That is temporary.”
“The payroll account is tied to it.”
Marcus closed the red folder.
“Your company has cash reserves for approximately nine days, according to the financial statement you submitted.
You may use that time to explain why you concealed a material personal relationship while requesting extensions.”
Serena’s eyes filled, but her anger was aimed at me.
“You planned this.”
“No,” I said.
“I planned to surprise my husband with our son.
You planned the rest when you walked to that gate.”
Her face twisted.
“You think money makes you untouchable.”
I almost laughed at the cruelty of hearing my own lesson repeated by the woman who had mocked me hours earlier.
“No,” I said.
“I think contracts have terms.
Authority has limits.
And choices have witnesses.”
Harris lowered his eyes.
Andrew moved closer to me, keeping his voice low.
“Send Ethan outside.”
“He stays with me.”
“He does not need to hear this.”
“He needed a father who remembered he existed when giving orders at the gate.”
Pain moved across Andrew’s face.
It might have been real.
That did not make it more important than the damage he had caused.
He crouched in front of Ethan.
“Buddy, I am sorry you got pulled into this.”
Ethan looked at the oak leaves.
“Were you going to let her pin these on you?”
Andrew glanced toward Serena.
That hesitation was an answer.
Ethan closed the velvet box.
“I don’t want to do it anymore,” he said.
Andrew stood slowly.
The senior officer announced that the ceremony was postponed.
He did not explain the allegations to the entire room.
He did not need to.
The sight of Andrew leaving the stage without his promotion certificate told the guests enough.
People began filing out in uneasy groups.
Some approached me, uncertain whether to offer sympathy.
I did not want condolences from people who had ignored me while Andrew collected the praise.
I kept one hand on Ethan’s shoulder and watched the hall empty.
Serena tried to leave through a side door, but Marcus stopped her with a final envelope.
