Chapter 4 — My Husband’s Mistress Read My Private Dates—Then the Doorbell Rang

That sentence landed differently now.

For months, perhaps years, Grant had survived by making certainty feel unreasonable.

Now he was doing it to Vanessa.

She recognized the technique much faster than I had.

Vanessa reached for her phone.

Grant moved around the table.

“Put that away.”

She stepped backward.

My attorney said quietly, “Nobody needs to delete anything tonight.”

“I’m not deleting it,” Vanessa said.

Her eyes remained on Grant.

“I’m checking.”

Grant’s mother whispered his name.

He ignored her.

Vanessa scrolled for several seconds, then stopped.

“Oh my God.”

Grant said, “Vanessa.”

She looked at me.

“He sent photographs.”

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

“Of what?”

“Pages.

Your notes, I guess.

A calendar.

Screenshots.”

“When?”

Vanessa looked down again.

She read several dates aloud.

The first matched a night Grant had supposedly been working late.

The second matched a Saturday when he told me he had gone to the gym.

The third matched the week before I changed my office lock.

My attorney turned over one page from the folder.

She pointed to a line without showing anyone else the full report.

The timestamp matched.

Vanessa sat down hard.

I finally understood the sentence that had bothered me from the moment she mentioned June 7.

Grant had claimed he never knew I told my therapist I felt unsafe.

But he had known.

He had simply wanted everyone to watch him learn it for the first time.

That was why his whisper had sounded so controlled.

It had been rehearsed.

“You knew,” I said.

Grant stared at me.

I repeated it.

“You knew before tonight.”

His expression changed from outrage to calculation.

“Anna, we were married.

You were keeping secret files about me.”

“They were about me.”

“They were about our marriage.”

“That did not make them yours.”

“You were meeting a divorce attorney behind my back.”

That was the moment Evelyn finally looked at her son instead of me.

“Grant,” she said slowly, “how did Vanessa know about the attorney?”

He had no clean answer.

Vanessa supplied it for him.
