Chapter 2 — My Mother Entered the NICU—Then Lied About Why She Was There

Sadie told us later that Vanessa had been on a video call.

Aunt Vanessa had said, “Tell her she has ten minutes.

People are arriving early tomorrow, and Mom still has things to do.”

Sadie had answered, “Eliza can’t breathe.”

Vanessa had replied, “The nurses are helping her.”

Then my mother had put the phone away and told Sadie to stop being dramatic like me.

On the footage, Sadie leaned toward the call button near my chair.

My mother moved in front of it.

That was when Carmen entered the room.

Carmen walked directly between my mother and Sadie.

My mother pointed toward the hallway and appeared to explain something.

Carmen shook her head.

My mother continued speaking.

Carmen crossed her arms.

For nearly thirty seconds, neither woman moved.

Then Carmen opened the door and gestured for my mother to leave.

My mother picked up the garment bag and walked out.

She did not approach the incubator.

She did not ask Carmen about Eliza.

She did not look at me asleep in the chair.

She left.

A second camera showed her walking through the corridor toward the elevators.

My father was visible in the lobby below, waiting near the entrance with his coat on and his car keys in his hand.

He had known she was there.

He had not come upstairs to see his granddaughter.

The footage ended at 1:19 a.m.

The security supervisor folded his hands on the desk.

“Your mother told the nurse she had permission to take Sadie downstairs for food,” he said.

“Because she was listed as an approved family visitor, staff initially treated it as a misunderstanding.

Nurse Carmen documented the interaction and prevented the child from leaving.”

Carmen looked devastated.

“I should have woken you immediately,” she said.

“You protected my daughter,” I told her.

“You stopped her from leaving.”

Carmen glanced at Sadie.

“She protected herself first.

She kept saying she wasn’t leaving her sister.”

Sadie stared at the pink crayon in her hand.

“I promised Eliza,” she said.

The hospital revoked my parents’ visitor access before we left the office.

Their names were removed from every approved list connected to Eliza and Sadie.

Security added a note requiring staff to call Matthew or me before allowing anyone else near the room.

The supervisor offered to document the attempted unauthorized removal in a formal incident report.

“Yes,” I said.

Matthew did not hesitate either.

“Yes.”

My phone remained blocked, so the messages began arriving on Matthew’s.

My mother wrote first.

“I cannot believe you are treating me like a criminal after everything I have done for you.”

My father followed.

“Your mother was helping.

You were exhausted and irrational.

Sadie would have been safer with us than sleeping in a hospital chair.”

Then Vanessa sent a message.

“You’ve destroyed my gender reveal over a dress and a misunderstanding.”

Matthew placed his phone on the table between us.
