Chapter 1 — My Mother Hit My Pregnant Belly—Then Ethan Pressed Play

4.9Editorial score

My mother’s face went white the moment Ethan pressed play.

The hospital corridor was already tense enough that every small sound seemed magnified—the wheels of carts, the squeak of shoes, the low voices behind closed doors—but when the security recording began, the argument around Ethan simply stopped.

On his phone screen, the baby shower appeared from the low angle beneath the dessert table.

Pastel balloons bobbed at the edge of the frame.

The donation box sat in clear view.

My mother stood beside it.

The audio was even clearer than the picture.

“Move.”

Then my voice: “Mom, no.

This isn’t yours.”

My mother’s hand disappeared behind the decorated table.

She pulled out the iron rod.

“You don’t deserve this.”

The recording caught the swing.

It caught the impact.

It caught me collapsing.

And it caught my mother standing over me afterward with the rod still in her hands.

Kyle’s entire story died in less than ten seconds.

Mara stared at the phone, one hand covering her mouth.

Ethan didn’t say anything.

He didn’t need to.

My mother recovered first.

“That angle is misleading,” she said.

Kyle immediately nodded.

“Exactly.

You can’t see what happened before.”

Ethan dragged the playback bar backward.

They watched the minutes before the blow.

There I was beneath the balloons, surrounded by friends, one hand resting on my stomach.

Someone announced the amount that had been raised.

People clapped.

I cried.

My mother stared at the donation box.

Nothing in the footage showed me threatening her.

Nothing showed me lunging.

Nothing showed anything remotely resembling the story she had just told.

It showed her walking toward money that wasn’t hers.

It showed me stopping her.

It showed her choosing the rod.

Mara’s voice shook.

“You said she fell.”

My mother’s jaw tightened.

“She provoked me.”

That was the first change in her story.

Ethan noticed it too.

“So now you did hit her?” he asked.

“I said she provoked me.”

Kyle stepped between them.

“Don’t twist her words.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You just told everyone Lena attacked first.”

Kyle lifted his phone.

“I have video too.”

“Good,” Mara said.

“Show it.”

For the first time, Kyle hesitated.
