Nothing.
— The medicine?
I pushed another receipt onto the table.
— The property taxes you told me were my contribution for being allowed to stay here?
My mother’s mouth tightened.
The notary examined several receipts.
— Keep these, Clara.
They may matter when the financial history of the property is reviewed.
Valeria stared at the pile.
— She was paying the taxes?
I looked at my sister.
— Part of them.
For years.
— Mom told me you barely contributed.
I didn’t answer.
I was suddenly too tired to defend myself against every lie.
The social worker stood.
— Clara, Mateo should not remain tonight in the same environment as the person identified in his statement.
We can arrange temporary accommodation while the immediate safety plan is put in place.
My mother looked offended.
— You’re removing my grandson from his own home?
The sentence hung in the room.
The notary looked at her.
So did Valeria.
Even my mother seemed to hear what she had accidentally admitted.
His own home.
For years she had called him that boy.
Now, when ownership mattered, he was suddenly her grandson.
I walked to the couch and lifted Mateo carefully.
He opened his eyes halfway.
— Mom?
— I’m here.
His gaze found the floor.
— My car.
Damián moved before anyone else did.
He picked up the red toy car.
For a second, I expected him to clutch it again.
Instead, he walked toward me and held it out.
He was eight years old.
Old enough to copy what adults rewarded, but still young enough to look ashamed when the rules suddenly changed.
— It’s his, — he said quietly.
Valeria’s face crumpled.
I took the car and put it into Mateo’s hand.
He closed his fingers around it and rested his head against my shoulder.
My mother watched us.
— Clara, don’t do this.
We can talk tomorrow.
I turned toward her.
— Mateo tried to talk long before tonight.
Her eyes moved to the police officer.
— I’m his grandmother.
— And he was still afraid of you.
She had no answer.
We left that night with the backpack, the blue folder, Julián’s USB drive, the hospital paperwork and the red car.
Nothing else.
The social worker helped arrange a temporary place where Mateo and I could sleep safely while the investigation began.
