“A punishment would be taking something that belongs to you.

I’m stopping voluntary payments from my account.”

“After we raised you.”

“You keep saying that like childhood was a loan.”

Mom flinched.

Dad didn’t.

“Watch yourself,” he said.

For most of my life, that sentence would have worked.

It was a command disguised as a warning.

It meant reduce yourself now or lose peace later.

I used to obey because peace mattered more than being right.

But standing there, I realized their version of peace had always required somebody else to absorb the cost.

Usually me.

I closed the folder.

“You gave me a choice.”

Dad stared at me.

“What?”

“At dinner.

You said I could hand over the money without questions or get out of your lives.”

Mom immediately said, “He was angry.”

“Then he shouldn’t make life-changing ultimatums when he’s angry.”

Dad’s face reddened.

“You know I didn’t mean it literally.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“Of course you did.”

“No.

What I knew was that nobody at that table objected.”

I looked at Mom.

“You kept eating.”

Then Dani.

“You told me twenty percent was plenty.”

Neither answered.

“So I took Dad seriously.

I removed my things from the house.

I separated every financial connection I could find.

And I’m not going back to the arrangement we had before.”

Mom’s anger cracked first.

“Then what are we supposed to do?”

It was the first real question anyone had asked me since the job offer arrived.

Not how much?

Not how much will we get?

What are we supposed to do?

I softened my voice, but not my answer.

“Make a budget based on your income.”

She stared at me.

“That’s your solution?”

“It’s your household.”

Dad shook his head.

“We have a mortgage.”

“I know.”

“Insurance.”

“I know.”

“Your mother has expenses.”

“I know.

I’ve been paying some of them.”

Dani spoke more quietly now.
