Chapter 3 — My Sister Found the Livestream Vanessa Thought No One Could See

4.9Editorial score

I did not embellish anything.

I did not need to.

I was told how to preserve the evidence and how to make a formal report.

Because Lily was asleep and medically stable, we arranged the next steps without dragging her through another interrogation in the middle of the night.

Then I contacted the pediatric office through its after-hours system to make sure the chart and photographs would remain available.

At 2:41 A.M., my phone began vibrating.

Vanessa.

I let it ring.

Again.

And again.

Then came a message.

Rachel, we need to talk before you do something irreversible.

Two minutes later:

I know you’re angry, but there are two sides to everything.

Then:

Please think about Chloe.

I stared at that last message for a long time.

Think about Chloe.

I had been thinking about Chloe for years.

I thought about how she always looked at her mother’s face before answering questions.

How she apologized when adults complimented her.

How she had once given Lily the bigger half of a cookie and then panicked when Vanessa noticed.

I thought about the video.

Chloe had tried to stop her mother.

Twice.

I typed nothing back.

At 7:10 the next morning, Vanessa called Emma instead.

Emma put the call on speaker after telling Vanessa she was doing so.

Vanessa’s voice had changed completely.

The soft, superior calm was gone.

“Emma, I don’t know what Rachel told you, but she’s spiraling.”

Emma looked at me across the table.

“I saw Lily.”

Silence.

“Okay,” Vanessa said carefully.

“Then you know it looks bad.”

Looks bad.

Not was bad.

Emma’s mouth tightened.

“I also found the stream.”

Nothing came through the speaker for several seconds.

Then Vanessa whispered, “What stream?”

Emma did not answer.

That was when Vanessa made her first mistake after learning the recording existed.

“That wasn’t supposed to be public.”

Emma and I looked at each other.

Vanessa realized what she had said.

“I mean—if you’re talking about one of my test streams, those are taken completely out of context.

I film all day.

Things look different on camera.”

“Scissors don’t,” Emma said.

Vanessa’s breathing sharpened.

“You have no right to download my content.”

“We’re preserving evidence,” I said.

Vanessa went silent again.

When she spoke, the sweetness disappeared.
