He rarely challenged my family directly, and Brianna seemed momentarily stunned.
Derek’s voice stayed calm.
“You insulted our daughter.
Charlotte told you to stop.
You doubled down.
Whatever Patty decides about her own property is Patty’s business.”
Brianna stared at him.
“You’re really going to pretend you don’t care about the money?”
Derek looked almost offended by the question.
“I came here for an anniversary dinner.”
Grandma Patty’s mouth twitched slightly.
My mother stood.
“Enough.
Emily, sweetheart, Brianna shouldn’t have said that.
She didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Emily looked up.
Before she could answer, Brianna jumped in.
“Of course I didn’t.”
Grandma’s gaze hardened.
“Do not use that child to repair your inheritance.”
Brianna froze.
My mother sat back down.
For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen.

“You are not responsible for making adults comfortable when they behave badly,” she said.
Then she returned to the folder.
“The document in front of me is a draft.
Nothing is being magically rewritten at this dining table.
Tomorrow, I will speak with my lawyer again.
I will make my decisions calmly, with advice, and without anyone here pressuring me.”
My father exhaled as if that offered hope.
“Good.
That’s all I’m asking.
Sleep on it.”
Grandma looked at him.
“I have been sleeping on it for years.”
His expression fell.
