Chapter 3 — My Son Called After His Wife’s Terrified Phone Went Dead

4.9Editorial score

“He’ll say you hate him.”

I swallowed.

“That is why this cannot depend only on me.”

For the first time, she looked at the folder differently.

Not as a collection of humiliations.

As a record.

Mr.

Lou met with us later that day.

He did not promise miracles.

He did not tell Clara that one photograph or one recording would solve everything.

He explained that we needed to preserve what she had, document what had happened during the emergency call, protect access to her records, and make sure Julian could not pressure her into quietly returning before she had independent advice.

Clara listened with both hands wrapped around a cup she never drank from.

Then Mr.

Lou asked whether she wanted to proceed with separating from Julian.

She stared at the table for a long time.

“Yes,” she finally said.

It was barely above a whisper.

Mr.

Lou waited.

Clara straightened.

“Yes,” she said again, louder.

“I want to leave him.”

Julian began calling before the day was over.

First he called Clara.

Then me.

Then Clara again.

When we stopped answering, his messages changed shape exactly as Mr.

Lou had warned they might.

He apologized.

Then blamed stress.

Then blamed Clara.

Then blamed me.

Then returned to apologizing.

One message said he had never intentionally hurt her.

Another said she had provoked him for years.

A later message demanded that she return because she had no right to take documents concerning their finances.

Mr.

Lou told her not to argue with him.

“Save it,” he said.

That became our rule.

Do not debate.

Do not persuade.

Save it.

The cruelest message came that night.

Julian wrote that Clara was nothing without him and would come crawling back when she understood how the world worked.

She read it twice.

Then instead of crying, she handed the phone to me.

“Save it.”

I did.

During the next several days, the private Julian and the public Julian seemed to fight for control of the same man.

The public Julian was polished and wounded.

He insisted his marriage was being destroyed by interference from his mother.

He described Clara as emotional, confused, financially irresponsible, and easily manipulated.

The private Julian kept sending messages that contradicted him.

He demanded obedience.

He threatened financial ruin.
