Daniel exhaled.
“Fine.
Don’t touch anything else.
I’ll call the police.”
The recording continued while they built the story.
Vanessa said Liam had been angry about a curfew.
Daniel suggested mentioning the lamp Liam had broken two years earlier.
Vanessa decided she would claim he had threatened her before.
Daniel reminded her that Liam’s wound needed an explanation.
“He came at you after you fell,” he said.
“You grabbed the frame because you were scared.”
That sentence matched Vanessa’s signed statement almost word for word.
It also matched Daniel’s.
Sergeant Mills stopped the recording again.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa was the first to recover.
“This is illegal,” she said.
“He recorded me without permission.”
Mills kept his voice even.
“The device was recording an incident involving its owner.
The legal questions can be reviewed later.
At this moment, the recording gives us evidence of an assault, a false report, and an attempt to conceal evidence.”
“It was edited.”
“The file was uploaded automatically before the phone was damaged.
The service retained the original timestamp and device information.”
“Margaret arranged this.”
She pointed at me as though I had struck Liam, moved the money, and dictated every word captured on the phone.
“She trained him to trap us.”
“No,” I said.
“You trapped yourself.”
Daniel finally looked at me.
“Mom, listen—”
I raised one hand.
For his entire life, that gesture had meant stop and think before speaking.
He stopped, but he did not think.
“Vanessa panicked,” he said.
“She was hurt.
I walked in and saw her on the floor.
I didn’t know what was true.”
“You knew enough to explain Liam’s wound for her.”
“I was trying to keep everyone calm.”
“You called the police and identified your son as the aggressor.”
“She said he pushed her.”
“And when he said she hit him, you told him to go upstairs.”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“I made a bad decision.”
Liam opened his eyes.
“You told them I’ve been violent for years.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“Liam, I was scared.”
“For her?” Liam asked.
“Or because I found the folder?”
That question changed the room again.
Sergeant Mills asked Officer Alvarez to bring in the blue folder recovered from Daniel’s study.
She placed it beside the laptop.
The documents inside showed repeated withdrawals from the education fund established after Liam’s mother’s death.
