Chapter 3 — The Anniversary Cake Exposed Why Her Husband’s Father Really Left

4.9Editorial score

“It was my company.

The money was an investment.

Walter agreed that I deserved financial independence.”

Hunter shook his head.

“Grandma’s care account was not investment capital.”

“Your grandmother had more money than she needed.”

The moment the sentence left Brenda’s mouth, the terrace went quiet again.

She seemed to hear herself too late.

Hunter’s expression changed.

Until then, he had been controlled and methodical.

Now the pain beneath his restraint became visible.

“She had more than she needed?”

Brenda stepped backward.

“That is not what I meant.”

“She needed round-the-clock nursing.

She needed physical therapy.

She needed medication that insurance refused to cover.

Dad was paying those bills from his business account because the care account kept coming up short.”

“And he could afford it.”

Cynthia turned away from her sister as though she had been struck.

Hunter pressed play again.

Walter held up photographs of a waterfront condominium.

“North Coast Lifestyle Management used the money to purchase this property.

The deed was placed in Brenda’s name alone.

She told the seller she planned to move in after my mother died and after she completed what she called an advantageous separation.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

The phrase was cold enough to sound rehearsed.

Walter displayed a copy of the purchase agreement, then a series of messages recovered from Brenda’s old tablet.

In them, she discussed selling the condominium later and presenting the proceeds as income from a consulting business.

She also wrote that Walter would never question her while he believed Elaine had stolen from the family.

One message read, “He always protects me when another woman is blamed.”

Brenda rushed toward the television.

Nathan caught her wrist before she could pull out the flash drive.

“Let go of me!”

“Stop trying to destroy evidence,” he said.

“It is not evidence.

It is edited revenge.”

A voice came from the doorway behind us.

“Then you should have no objection to the originals.”

Everyone turned.

Walter stood inside the open terrace doors.

He looked older than he did in the video, but steadier.

Beside him was Elaine, a slim woman with silver threaded through her dark hair.

She carried a leather document case against her chest.

Brenda stared at her estranged husband.

“You planned this.”

Walter stepped onto the terrace.

“Hunter asked me to come because he believed you might finally apologize to Jillian tonight.

I waited in the car because I did not want my presence to turn their anniversary into a confrontation.”

His eyes moved to the cake on the ground.

“You managed that without me.”

Elaine stopped beside the table.

Cynthia approached her first, then hesitated.

“Elaine, I am sorry.”

Elaine’s face tightened.

“You stopped answering my calls.”
