Chapter 1 — She Demanded My Baby’s DNA Test—Then Her Own Family Result Appeared

4.9Editorial score

Eleanor’s smile disappeared so quickly that for one strange second I wondered whether I had misunderstood the page.

David was still leaning over my shoulder.

I could feel his hand against the back of my chair, suddenly rigid.

The first section of the laboratory report was simple.

David was Chloe’s biological father.

The probability was greater than 99.99 percent.

There it was—the answer Eleanor had demanded for six months, printed in sterile black letters.

Every joke, every whisper, every accusation that I had betrayed my husband had just collapsed.

But nobody was looking at that result anymore.

The second relationship analysis had changed the room.

When David arranged the testing, he had told the laboratory exactly why we were doing it.

Eleanor had insisted Chloe’s appearance proved she did not belong to their family.

David, furious at the idea that his mother might attack the test itself if the result embarrassed her, asked what additional family samples could help document the relationships.

Eleanor volunteered hers without hesitation.

She had sat in the collection room with a smug little smile while a technician swabbed the inside of her cheek.

“Now we’ll know exactly who belongs to whom,” she had said.

The report in my hands said Eleanor was not genetically consistent with being David’s biological mother.

I read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

David reached for the folder.

“That can’t be right.”

Eleanor stood so abruptly that her knee struck the coffee table.

One cup tipped, spilling across a stack of napkins.

“It’s a mistake.”

Nobody moved.

One of David’s aunts, Margaret, stared at Eleanor.

“What does it say?”

David didn’t answer immediately.

He looked from the report to his mother as if the distance between them had suddenly become impossible to measure.

Finally, he said, “It says she’s not my biological mother.”

Margaret’s hand flew to her mouth.

The other aunt, Susan, whispered, “Eleanor?”

“It’s wrong,” Eleanor snapped.

“Obviously it’s wrong.”

I closed the folder and placed it carefully on the table.

For months, I had imagined this moment.

I had imagined Eleanor being forced to apologize after seeing proof that Chloe was David’s daughter.

I had pictured relief, maybe even satisfaction.

I had never imagined watching my husband discover that the woman who raised him might not be biologically related to him.

The victory I thought I wanted vanished.

David sat down.

“Mom, were you adopted? Is there something you never told me?”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Then explain it.”

Eleanor looked around the room.

For the first time since I had known her, she seemed to have no prepared expression.

No wounded dignity.

No superior smile.

No cutting remark ready to throw at someone else.

Just fear.

Margaret slowly stood.

“Maybe we should call the laboratory.”

“No,” Eleanor said immediately.

That one word changed everything.

David looked up.

“Why not?”
