Lily pushed two small fingers into the torn seam of her stuffed rabbit.
Daniel moved before anyone else did.
“Lily, stop.”
Judge Margaret Whitaker’s voice cracked across the courtroom.
“Mr.
Caldwell, you will remain seated.”
Daniel froze beside his chair.
For the first time that morning, the polished confidence had vanished from his face.
Vanessa Price sat rigidly beside him, one hand clenched around the strap of her handbag.
Emma could barely breathe.
She had entered the Franklin County courtroom prepared to abandon nearly everything she had spent seven years building with Daniel.
She had convinced herself that surrender was the fastest road to peace.
The house, the joint savings, the cars, the company shares—none of it felt worth another month of fighting while she was eight months pregnant.
But Lily was standing ten feet away, frightened and holding something inside that stuffed rabbit as though it were the only safe place she knew.
The judge looked at the child.
“Lily, you do not have to take anything out right now.
I only want you to tell me what you meant when you said your father and Ms.
Price made you practice things about Emma.”
Lily stared at Daniel.
Daniel stared back.
Emma saw another tiny shake of his head.
Judge Whitaker saw it too.
“Mr.
Caldwell,” she said, “do not communicate with this child while I am speaking to her.”
Daniel’s attorney touched his sleeve and murmured something.
Daniel finally looked away.
Lily swallowed.
“They gave me words.”
“What words?”
Lily’s voice became almost inaudible.
“That Emma screams at me.
That she throws things.
That she scares me when Daddy isn’t home.”
Emma’s hand flew to her mouth.
She had never heard those accusations before.
Daniel stood again.
“This is completely inappropriate.
She’s six years old.
She gets confused.”
“Sit down,” the judge said.
“She doesn’t understand what she’s saying.”
“Mr.
Caldwell.”
Daniel dropped into his chair.
Lily began rubbing one of the rabbit’s ears between her fingers.
Judge Whitaker did not press her quickly.
She asked only whether anyone had told Lily what would happen if she refused to repeat those statements.
Lily nodded.
“Vanessa said Emma would send me away if I ruined Daddy’s plan.”
Vanessa jerked upright.
“I never said that.”
The judge turned toward her.
“You were warned about interruptions.”
Vanessa’s mouth closed.
Emma felt as though the floor had moved beneath her.
She looked at Daniel.
