People had seen enough to understand the difference between drama and restraint.
The principal stepped toward the microphone.
“Mrs.
Evans,” he said, looking toward me, “please come forward.”
I froze.
For most of my life as a mother, I had gotten used to moving in the opposite direction.
Behind the scenes.
Before sunrise.
After everyone else went to sleep.
Toward the extra shift, the overdue bill, the forgotten lunch, the last open seat at the school event.
Walking down a center aisle while hundreds of people watched felt almost impossible.
My sister nudged me.
“Go.”
I took one step.
Then another.
People moved aside.
Some were still standing.
A woman near the aisle touched my arm as I passed and whispered, “You should be proud.”
“I am,” I said.
My voice cracked on the second word.
Halfway down the aisle, I looked at Michael.
He was waiting for me.
Not smiling exactly.
His eyes were wet.
That nearly undid me.
When I reached the front row, Chloe stood so abruptly that the chair legs scraped against the floor.
She held her purse tightly against her body.
For one strange second we were face-to-face.
She seemed ready to say something.
Maybe she wanted to defend herself.
Maybe she wanted to tell me I had embarrassed her.
Maybe she wanted to remind me that David was her husband now, as though that fact had anything to do with who had raised Michael.
Instead, she lowered her head.
I did not gloat.
I did not whisper anything cruel.
I simply sat down in the seat my son had saved for me.
That silence hurt her more than anything I could have said.
David looked at me then.
Really looked at me.
His face was red.
“Sarah,” he murmured.
I raised one hand.
“Not now.”
He stopped.
For once, he listened.
Michael returned to the microphone.
“Thank you,” he said.
The principal stepped back.
Michael unfolded his original speech but didn’t begin reading immediately.
“I want to be clear about something else,” he said.
“This isn’t about choosing one parent over another.”
David looked up.
“My father is my father.
Chloe is his wife.
I’m not standing here because I want people humiliated.”
Chloe blinked rapidly.
