They remembered Brooks reaching down with sand on his glove.

They remembered the moment a sleeve slid back and Ellis went still.

Most of all, they remembered the radio cracking through the desert air with one unfinished word that changed the posture of an entire firing line.

Commander.

She had possessed authority before they knew it.

She had possessed skill before they respected it.

And neither one had been created by the moment Kane finally noticed.
