Chapter 1 — The CEO’s Camera Saw Who Broke Rachel’s Door

4.9Editorial score

The video began with an empty strip of wet pavement.

Rachel sat at the kitchen table with Emma curled against her chest while Nathan leaned over the laptop.

Rain hissed against the windows.

Behind them, the damaged front door rested crookedly against the chair that had been Rachel’s only barricade.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then a man entered the frame.

Rachel stopped breathing.

“That’s him.”

Nathan did not ask who she meant.

The man crossed the edge of Nathan’s driveway at 11:41 p.m., moving quickly toward Rachel’s house.

The camera was mounted high on Nathan’s garage, intended to watch the side drive and the narrow strip between the two properties.

It did not give them a perfect view of Rachel’s porch, but it showed enough.

The man’s face appeared clearly when he turned beneath Nathan’s garage light.

Emma buried her face in Rachel’s shoulder.

Rachel reached for the laptop.

“Turn it off.”

Nathan stopped the recording immediately.

He did not tell her she needed to watch.

He did not tell her what she should feel.

He simply closed his hand over the edge of the screen and waited.

Rachel stared at the frozen image.

“That’s Emma’s father,” she finally said.

The words seemed to take something out of her.

Emma lifted her head.

“Daddy was mad.”

Rachel pressed a kiss into her daughter’s wet hair.

“I know, baby.”

Nathan sat across from them.

“Do you want me to close this?”

Rachel looked toward the broken door.

For several seconds, the only sound was rain dripping from Nathan’s jacket onto the kitchen floor.

Then Rachel shook her head.

“No.

Play it.”

Nathan restarted the video.

At 11:42, Emma’s father disappeared beyond the camera’s direct view.

A moment later, his voice carried faintly across the rain.

The words were distorted, but one sentence came through clearly enough.

“You don’t get to hide from what you owe me.”

Rachel’s eyes shut.

On the recording came three heavy knocks.

Then her own voice.

“Leave.”

Another impact.

The camera shook slightly from wind, but the audio continued.

A harder crash followed.

Emma whimpered in Rachel’s arms because she recognized it.

Nathan’s eyes moved from the laptop to the shattered frame.

The noise on the recording matched the damage in front of him.

Then came Rachel’s voice again, sharper this time.

“Get out of my house.”

A child cried in the background.

The man reappeared in the camera’s view less than a minute later.

He moved back across the property line, looked over his shoulder, and walked toward a vehicle parked farther down the street.

Before entering it, he stopped beneath the garage light.

His face was visible again.
