Sometimes I imagined yelling.
Sometimes I imagined saying something devastating and walking away while she begged me to stop.
Instead, when Anne entered, all I noticed was how ordinary she looked.
Older.
Tired.
Nervous.
Human.
That almost made it worse.
She sat across from me and kept her hands in her lap.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I looked at her.
“That sentence is ten years late.”
“I know.”
“Why me?”
Anne closed her eyes.
“When Dad started demanding a name, I thought he was going to throw me out.
I was terrified.
You were the person everyone knew was closest to me.
You walked me home.
You helped me with school.
You were always around.
I knew that if I pointed at you, people could take ordinary things and make them look different.”
Every kindness I had shown her had become material for the lie.
“You knew what he would do to me?”
“No.”
“You watched him hit me.”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“You watched the police take me away.”
“Yes.”
“And you still said nothing.”
Anne began crying.
“I thought I could tell the truth later.”
“But later kept getting more expensive.”
She nodded.
“That night became the next morning.
Then people at church knew.
Then the police were involved.
Then you were gone.
Every day I waited made what I had done worse.”
“So you chose yourself every day for ten years.”
She had no answer to that.
The technician entered before either of us spoke again.
The samples were collected under identification and chain-of-custody procedures.
Anne’s child did not attend the meeting.
The child’s sample was handled separately with appropriate consent, away from the confrontation.
I was grateful for that.
Whatever Anne had done, her child had not done anything to me.
The result came back conclusive.
I was excluded as the biological father.
There was no ambiguity left for Robert to hide behind.
Anne signed a sworn statement admitting that her accusation against me had been false.
She stated that I had never assaulted her, threatened her, or fathered her child.
Linda signed her own statement describing the DNA results, Robert’s attempt to suppress them, and the recorded conversation.
Then Jake called me.
I almost let it ring out.
